Visit Greece 2020 - about COVID 19

Danai Resort Greece

During the pandemic of Covid-19, that affects the entire planet, Greece has timely taken all necessary measures that intercepted effectively its spread in the country. Thus, until today, Greece reports approximately 3.000 cases and less than 200 deaths.

See here detailed data about the evolution of the pandemic in Greece.

Now, after the successful management of the health crisis, the Greek government proceeds gradually to the lift of measures taken against the spread of Covid-19 throughout Greece and leads the country to normalcy. The government has announced a two-month plan in order to open again Greece’s market in several stages.

Greece’s return to normalcy has started from May 4 with the opening of some shops and services, such as bookstores, electronic stores and hair salons. More shops and services have opened on May 11, while as of May 18 large shopping malls, archaeological sites etc. re-opened. At the same time, the land and air connection between the areas of the continental Greece and the ferry connection with Crete and Evia has been permitted, while as of May 25 transition to/from all the other Greek islands is permitted. In addition, as of May 25, the re-opening of restaurants, cafes and bars has started. On June 1st summer cinemas have opened, on June 15th museums, historic buildings and areas, thematic parks and entertainment parks as well as wellness services (gyms, saunas, spas, thermal baths etc.) open while on July 1st concerts and cultural events start in open areas.

The plan of the government for a gradual lifting of the measures, relies on monitoring developments of the gradual return to normalcy on a 24-hour basis. At all events, the Greek government requests the respect of social distancing between shop owners and customers; to limit the number of customers per footage when indoors; and to mandatorily use a mask in public transports, taxis and hospitals; and when visiting public services and shops.

For the plan of gradual lift of restriction measures see here.

See here the Health Protocols of Tourist Businesses.

Till all restrictions are lifted

Previous restrictions will still apply during Greece’s gradual return to normalcy and lifting each one will be carefully examined and announced to the public.

Year-round hotels and campings re-open as of June 1st, while seasonal hotels/resorts open as of June 15th.
Flights from abroad will start in two stages: on June 15th flights to “Eleftherios Venizelos” Athens International Airport (ATH), and “Macedonia” Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG) will start from countries with good epidemiological features (see the list of these countries here), while as of July 1st flights to all Greek airports and from all countries will start, with the exception of those presenting negative epidemiological features. For the entrance of visitors in Greece, there will be no condition of any type of test or the imposition of any quarantine, while only sample tests for epidemiological monitoring will be effected.

Until then, a 14-day quarantine is imposed. The ban for private or professional sailboats departing or docking at Greece’s ports has ceased to apply as of May 25th, while for cruise-ships is extended until further notice.

New rules for the tourists in Greece in the situation of COVID-19

COVID-19 in Greece

Indeed, major newspapers and news websites have praised Greece for the way it is dealing  with the deadly virus and the low figures of cases and deaths recorded. It is especially impressive because the country is now only now emerging from a crippling 10-year-long economic crisis.

On April 10 Bloomberg ran an op-ed with the title “Greece Shows How to Handle the Crisis”. The article notes the immediate and bold response of the Greek government to the coronavirus threat, saying “Athens closed down all non-essential shops only four days after reporting its first Covid-19 death. In contrast, Italy and Spain did so after 18 and 30 days, respectively. A ban on non-essential movement in Greece came only a week afterward — faster than in either of the other two countries.”

The Greece’s Minister of Tourism Harry Theocharis said that Greek authorities are mulling the introduction of a ”Health Passport” which will serve as proof that an individual is not suffering from the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Is it safe in Greece?

On April 1, a plane from China delivered 250,000 protective masks, 125,000 protective uniforms and tens of thousands of pieces of protective gear. Others have arrived from the United Arab Emirates.

Private and public companies as well as business associations have chipped in with more than 10 million euros for the purchase of ventilators, intensive care beds and other equipment. The Greek parliament has also offered to cover the cost of 50 new ICU beds to be installed at Sotiria hospital.

PM Mitsotakis said in parliament there are 3,400 hospital beds and 870 ICU beds available to use against the COVID-19 epidemic and that nursing staff numbers was increased.

Come in Greece and boost your immune system

Boosting your immune system is one of the best things you can do because it is your body's key defense when it comes to fighting a virus. Even if you are exposed to a virus, the coronavirus or others, if your immune system is strong, you have a better chance of not getting sick. Vitamin C is a popular choice for supporting immunity, but another key nutrient for your immune system is vitamin D. Once thought as the vitamin for strong bones, vitamin D actually does a lot more for your body -- including support your immune system.
